Sawubona – A Zulu Greeting

Sawubona is a term that Zulu tribes use as a greeting, but it’s more than just that. Sawubona stretches further and deeper. It includes more than the I. Sawubona means not only do I see you, but my ancestors see you, and together we acknowledge and recognize one another. We are both present in this time and place as one.

It’s a beautiful way to say hello and goodbye. In our busy and at times chaotic world, it’s nice to have a simple greeting evoke so much power. Perhaps the word hello and goodbye can mean something deeper, even if only for you.
